Ceiba speciosa is one of the most visually dramatic trees in cultivation — a distinctive silver-green trunk covered in conical thorns, and in late fall an explosion of deep pink orchid-like blooms before the leaves fully return. No other tree in the SWFL palette replicates the combination of trunk character and bloom spectacle. Landscape architects and estate designers who have seen one specify it on sight. The problem: it is almost impossible to source locally at specimen scale. No SWFL contractor or nursery has web content for Floss Silk Tree. SWFL Field Performance
Zone 9b–11. Full sun. Drought tolerant once established. Moderate salt tolerance. Semi-deciduous in SWFL — drops leaves in late fall just before bloom, creating the bare-branch flowering display the tree is famous for. Grows rapidly to 30–60ft with a broad spreading canopy. The trunk's conical thorns are a hazard and a design feature simultaneously — they make the tree a dramatic destination on the property. Not suitable for high-pedestrian areas. Root system is vigorous — provide adequate setback from pavement and foundations.
