Why Contractors Come to Gulfroot
Coccoloba diversifolia is a Florida native that fills a gap in the native tree palette — it delivers a dense, rounded canopy with multi-season interest (fragrant spring flowers, persistent purple fruit clusters that attract birds) and exceptional coastal tolerance. It is closely related to Sea Grape (Coccoloba uvifera) and equally salt-tolerant, but grows taller and more tree-like. Contractors specifying native compliance trees for coastal SWFL projects often default to Sabal Palm or Live Oak — Pigeon Plum gives them a broadleaf native shade tree option. Almost no local nursery or contractor has content for this species at trade scale.
SWFL Field Performance
Zone 10–11. Full sun to part shade. Very high salt tolerance — native to coastal hammocks of South Florida. Drought tolerant once established. Evergreen in SWFL. Grows to 25–35ft with a dense, rounded canopy. Produces small, grape-like purple fruit clusters in summer that attract mockingbirds, doves, and other native birds. Florida native — counts toward native vegetation requirements in Lee, Collier, Charlotte counties.
