Why Contractors Come to Gulfroot
Hyophorbe verschaffeltii is the taller, more slender sibling of the Bottle Palm (H. lagenicaulis) — same Mascarene Island genus, same distinctive trunk swelling, but growing to 20–25ft with a more graceful, spindle-shaped silhouette. Landscape architects who specify Bottle Palm for tight spaces and need something more vertical for a taller courtyard application ask for Spindle Palm. Supply is equally thin — both species are slow-growing and rarely stocked in meaningful quantities locally. Gulfroot sources through Homestead specialty palm growers.
SWFL Field Performance
Zone 10b–11. Full sun. Drought tolerant once established. High salt tolerance — Mascarene Island origin makes it extremely well-adapted to SWFL coastal conditions. Single-trunk palm to 20–25ft with a narrower crown than Royal Palm. The trunk is slightly swollen at the base and mid-section (less dramatically than Bottle Palm). Slow growth rate; established specimens represent significant grower investment. Cold-sensitive — coastal and southern SWFL only.
Direct from Homestead — not through a distributor.
