Talipariti tiliaceum (Sea Hibiscus, also called Mahoe) is one of the very few true coastal trees that tolerates direct salt spray and beachfront conditions while also producing ornamental flowers. The large, round leaves are tropical and bold; the flowers open yellow in the morning and fade through orange to deep red by evening — a single tree can show three colors simultaneously. Florida native — eligible for coastal native vegetation compliance. Almost no SWFL contractor addresses this species at estate scale.
SWFL Field Performance
Zone 10–11. Full sun. Very high salt tolerance — one of the most salt-spray tolerant trees in cultivation. Drought tolerant once established. Florida native — the only native hibiscus family tree in South Florida. Grows to 30–40ft as an upright to spreading tree. Blooms year-round in SWFL with peak flushes in warm months. The color-changing flower is the defining ornamental feature. Very fast-growing in ideal coastal conditions. One of the best choices for direct beachfront and seawall-edge planting where other trees struggle.
